Responsibilities & Context
Lead a cluster of stores to deliver profitable sales, strong customer experience, consistent brand standards, disciplined stock and cash controls, and capable store teams. The Area Manager coaches Store Managers, reviews performance with evidence, and resolves operating gaps quickly.
Key responsibilities
- Commercial performance
- Own cluster sales delivery against target while protecting the company margin target; review sales and gross margin weekly and agree recovery actions with each Store Manager.
- Grow customer traffic, average bill value and repeat visits through local selling plans, relevant in-store activity, seasonal execution and coaching on combined selling.
- Review each store’s profit and loss monthly; support stores below breakeven with a written action plan, named owner and follow-up date.
- Identify viable non-China suppliers and products where assigned; validate landed cost, quality, margin and supplier readiness, and obtain required approvals before any purchase commitment.
- Customer experience and brand standards
- Visit each store regularly using the approved assessment; inspect service, presentation, cleanliness, product availability, pricing and brand execution, then close findings within agreed timelines.
- Ensure quarterly visual campaigns are installed on time, kept clean and stocked, and supported by dated evidence.
- Capture customer requests, consolidate recurring needs and send the weekly list to Product by the agreed deadline; track responses and close the loop with stores.
- Stock, cash and operating controls
- Monitor stock sell-through, aged and near-expiry inventory; ensure trackers are current, execute approved action plans and move products before pull-out dates.
- Prevent cash and stock losses through daily cash reconciliation, timely system entries, regular stock checks and prompt investigation of variances.
- Escalate unexplained cash gaps, shrinkage, suspected misconduct, supplier issues and material operational risks immediately through the proper reporting line.
People leadership and execution
- Set clear goals with Store Managers, review scorecards at least monthly, coach to improve results and document agreed actions.
- Retain and develop strong performers; recognize results, identify successors and raise retention or performance concerns early with HR.
- Ensure stores are staffed, trained and ready for seasonal peaks; coordinate with support teams and follow through on commitments.
- Own problems through resolution: define the cause, assign the fix to the right owner, set a due date and verify the result. Escalate early when a decision or support is needed.
Decision rights and escalation
- Can set store-level priorities and assign corrective actions within approved budgets, policies and staffing plans.
- Cannot commit to supplier purchases, margin exceptions, discounts or policy exceptions without the required delegated approval.
- Escalates material safety, cash, stock, people, legal or reputational risks immediately; provides facts, actions taken and support needed.
Experience and capabilities
- Experience managing multiple retail stores or leading a high-volume store team; relevant retail operations experience preferred.
- Sound commercial judgement with confidence reading sales, margin, basket, repeat-customer and store P&L reports.
- Strong coaching, communication, planning and follow-through; able to influence teams across store and head-office functions.
- Comfortable using POS / MIS reports, spreadsheets and digital trackers; careful with evidence, approvals and confidential information.
- Willingness to travel regularly across the assigned cluster and work around retail operating schedules.
